Abstract

This  study  was  conducted  to  investigate  the  effect  of herbal extracts including Bitterweed (Andrographis paniculata), Lemon balm (Elsholtzia ciliata), Perila (Perilla frutescens) and White elicta (Eclipta prostrata) dietary on the ability to protect tilapia against Streptococcus  agalactiae (serotype Ib and III).  Bitterweed (Andrographis paniculata), Lemon balm (Elsholtzia ciliata), Perila (Perilla frutescens) and White elicta (Eclipta prostrata) extracts were singlely mixed to feed with doses of 156 mg, 1250 mg, 25000 mg and  2500 mg per one kg feed (respectively). Fish were intraperitoneally injected with 0.1 mL of  106 CFU. mL-1   S.  agalactiae serotype III or serotype Ib. The results showed that the indicated herb extracts proved the high protection to tilapia from S. agalactiae, especially when increasing the feeding rhythm of herbal extract suplementation with 1 week – interval. Perila (Perilla frutescens) and White elicta (Eclipta prostrata) extract can be considered as potential herbal extract for the treatment of disease caused by S. agalactiae in tilapia.
