Abstract

Golden apple snail (GAS), Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck, is of the important pests on rice in Thua Thien Hue. This study was carried out in 2023 aim to assess the damage of GAS and the fluctuation in its density on rice fields in Thua Thien Hue province. The secondary data was collected via annual reports from Sub Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection in from the period 2018-2022. Primary data was collected through investigating rice fileds at six sites planting rice in Hue city including four wards (Huong Long, Huong An, Huong So, Huong Vinh) and two communes (Huong Phong and Phu Duong) in both Winter-spring and Summer-autunm croppings seasons. Results showed that more than 1.000 hectares of rice had been infested with GAS annually during the period 2018 – 2022, average density was from 3 – 6 GAS per square metter up to 10 – 20 GAS per square locally. In 2023, both the Winter-spring and Summer-autunm croppings, on rice fields the GAS population density was highest at the tillering stage, reached 0.57 – 1.51 clusters/m2 and 3.03 – 5.45 individuals/m2 , that was higher than the density at seedling, booting and pre-harvest stages. Meanwhile, the sex ratio of adult GAS was highest at seedling stage with male to female ratio of 1:3.6 and lowest at pre-harvest stage with ratio 1:1.6, respectively. It is necessary to do further researchs on biology of GAS for accurate predicting their occurrence in ricefields and building GAS management process effectively at local.
