Abstract

The study was conducted with the aim of assessing the current status of applying safety measures when using pesticides by rice producers in Quang Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. Eighty rice producers were interviewed with a standardised questionnaire (40 households each commune) and in-depth interviewed of 4 commune officials. The study used a set of 41 safety- measures criteria divided into 4 groups to assess the level of perception and practices of  safety measures while using pesticide of the rice producers. The research results showed that rice producers highly perceived the importance of applying and practicing the mentioned measures at different extents. The group of hygiene measures after using pesticides and the group of measures of right - sufficient - effective use of pesticides gained the highest level of perception and the most thorough practice. The group of measures of using pesticide protective equipment (PPE) when spraying received the lowest attention by rice farmers and have not been thoroughly practiced. By exploring the main barriers of lack of information, fear of cost, and lack of knowledge regarding PPE among rice producers, this study highlights the importance of communication activities in raising awareness and facilitating practices of safety use of pesticides.
