Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Toxocara canis infection in domestic dogs in Hue city and evaluate the treatment efficacy of two forms of Ivermectin. Fecal samples from dogs were tested by flotation technique with the Darling’s solution. Results showed that the overall rate of T. canis infection of dogs raised in Hue city was 12.22%. The infection rate in peripheral areas was 3.96 times higher than that in central areas.  Dogs of any ages may be infected with T. canis. Dogs from 0 to 6 months old showed the highest infection rate (23.68%), followed by dogs at 6 months to 12 months (14.17%) and over 12 months old (7.41%). Periodic deworming reduced the risk of roundworm infection by 67%, and cleaning dogs reduced the risk of T. canis infection by 74%. There was no statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) among infection rates of the risk factors (dog breed, breeding method, awareness of dog owners, handing feces). Treating dogs infected with T. canis with ivermectin injection and ivermectin drops both resulted in a 100% cure rate.
