Abstract

The experiment was conducted from April to July 2025 at the Experimental Campus of Can Tho Technical and Economic College, Can Tho City. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized factorial design with two factors and three replications, including six treatments. The factor A (melon varieties: cantaloupe (Cucumis melo var cantalupensis) and melon (Cucumis melo L.) and factor B (rootstock types: pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata L.), wax gourd (Benincasa hispida (Thumb.) and melon (Cucumis melo L. var. conomon). The study aimed to identify suitable rootstock types to improve plant growth, enhance double-fruit bearing capacity per plant, increase yield and fruit quality. The results showed that the differences in yield components and yield between cantaloupe and melon scions were mainly attributed to varietal characteristics. Among the rootstock types, pumpkin rootstock was the most effective, promoting vigorous plant growth and resulting in greater fruit size, higher average fruit weight, and increased yield compared with the other rootstocks. In particular, grafting cantaloupe scions onto pumpkin rootstock resulted in the highest proportion of plants bearing two fruits per plant (78.3%). This combination produced an average fruit weight of 1.98 kg, fruit height of 24.3 cm, fruit circumference of 50.5 cm, potential yield (49.4 t ha⁻¹) and the highest actual yield (42.8 t ha⁻¹). In addition, fruit soluble solids content reached 15°Brix, weight loss was 10%, and the average storage life was 33.7 days.
